Ottawa Senators Extend 2020 First-Round Pick

Greig contract

On Friday, the Ottawa Senators announced a contract extension for forward Ridly Greig. The former first-round pick is receiving a four-year extension worth $3.25 million per year.

The 22-year-old forward has played in 36 games this season and has recorded six goals and six assists. In 128 career NHL games, Greig has scored 21 goals and added 26 assists.

The Senators drafted Greig in the first round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The Lethbridge native has been a spark on the Senators roster. He is a hard skater and can get under the skin of his opponents. There is some Brad Marchand and Tom Wilson in Greig’s play.

Role with the Senators

Greig’s new contract follows a season in which he played 72 games left season. As a result, Greig went into the new season with the expectation of being a regular in the lineup. That has happened and then some. Greig has been skating on the team’s top line alongside Brady Tkachuk and Shane Pinto.

“Ridly has established himself as a key member of our team going forward,” said Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios. “He brings a good mix of versatility and tenacity to our forward group.”

Greig and the Senators Fighting for a Playoff Spot

Greig’s new contract comes as the Senators continue their hunt for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The organization last made the playoffs in 2017, when they came within one win of the Stanley Cup Final. As a result, the organization and their fans hope the team can get over the hump and into the playoffs.

Currently, the Senators sit three points out of the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot. Behind Greig and the other members of the Senators core, perhaps this will be a special year for Ottawa.
