One of Most Highly-Coveted Right-Shot Defenceman Traded

March 2, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The 2025 NHL trade deadline keeps us all interested and at this time, still a few days away from the deadline, a major player has been moved. After earlier reports of wanting a trade, the Chicago Blackhawks have dealt top-flight defenceman Seth Jones to the Florida Panthers, along with a fourth-round pick. The talented right-shot D-man is sure to provide a boost to his new team’s backend. Assuming he can play to his capability this is a huge addition. Furthermore, the return in the deal is Spencer Knight and a first-round pick. Also, they are retaining 26% of Jones’ salary, which carries out for the next five years of his contract.

Seth Jones Trade is a Major Statement

The 12-year veteran has had somewhat of an up-and-down career. However, no one can deny Jones’ level of athleticism and skill. The athleticism is not hard to see coming from a family of athletes. Seth’s brother, Caleb Jones, has played over 200 NHL games throughout his career. Also, their father, Ronald “Popeye” Jones, is a former NBA player.

For Seth Jones at the time of this trade, at 30 years old, it is possible between the maturity and skill level he has, that potentially could see him playing some of his best hockey. Especially being on a strong team now. He has 26 points in 40 games this year on a Hawks team trying to find themselves. Furthermore, his career high of 57 points came in 2017-18 with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jones is currently making $9.5 million per year and is signed until the end of the 2029-30 campaign. He brings a talented, top-four defender to his new club. It instantly boosts their defence.

With Florida adding Jones, it will be a huge benefit. He bolsters an already strong top six, with the likes of Gustav Forsling and Aaron Ekblad. In case you weren’t sure if Florida was for real in 2024-25, they are.

What Becomes of the Hawks Following the Trade

Despite losing a talented defender in Seth Jones via trade, it does help that the Hawks redistribute salary. Moving on from Jones, should add a couple players that can boost the team’s overall depth. Based on this year, thinking outside the box should be beneficial. Everyone knows, that with Connor Bedard and some other talented players, they want to be competitive sooner rather than later. Hopefully, a major trade like this should assist general manager Kyle Davidson achieve that goal.

Spencer Knight was having a very nice season in Florida. He was 12-8-1, with two shutouts. Also, he had a 2.40 GAA and a .907 SV%. The Hawks are hoping he is a fit within their young, developing core.
