NHL Rumours: Vancouver Canucks Possible Trade Plans

January 6, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL rumours

It’s time for another edition of NHL rumours. We’re into the new year, but the rumours just keep coming. We’ve seen a few deals made this season, but there could be more coming. We may also see some blockbuster deals as we approach the March 7 trade deadline. Things could get really interesting in the next couple of months. This edition of NHL rumours deals with some possible big-time deals involving the Vancouver Canucks.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Vancouver Canucks Possibly Dealing Star Players

Rumour: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman wades into the drama that surrounds Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller during Saturday night’s Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada.

Analysis: Things seem to be afoot in the Pacific Northwest regarding the Canucks. Friedman referenced an interview Vancouver General Manager Patrik Allvin did with Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre.

The Headlines segment revealed that the Canucks are “definitely” in the trade market. However, it’s not just Miller or Pettersson. It seems that the Canucks are gauging the market for both forwards.

There has been plenty of drama surrounding both parties. However, it seems to be that that Allvin is just doing his homework at this point. There doesn’t seem to be anything concrete at this point, but things can always change.

A Realm of Possibilities

Friedman mentioned that a number of paths forward could play out for the Canucks. We could see no trades, either Miller or Pettersson getting dealt or both of them being shipped out. The longtime insider didn’t give an insight on which option was the most likely. However, this is surprising considering the money committed to both players.

There haven’t been any concrete links to any particular team at this point. Friedman also reminds everyone that neither player has made a formal trade request.

It was mentioned by Friedman that Miller would love a return to the United States if he does get traded. Miller had stints with the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning in the past.

What It Means

There are plenty of moving parts to make a trade happen. Miller has more control over where he could go in a potential deal. He has a no-movement clause that he would have to waive in order to facilitate a deal.

Pettersson’s no-trade clause doesn’t kick in until next season, but his deal would likely be harder to move. The Swede currently commands $11.6 million per season while Miller only gets $8 million. Miller’s age may also make him a more moveable asset should Allvin want to swing a trade.

There seems to be a rift between Pettersson and Miller and it could lead to a messy separation. Allvin has proven that he’s willing to make risky moves in order to make the Canucks a better team,

The issues between the two players could still be solved internally, but it seems that people want an answer one way or another. Time may not heal the wounds between all parties involved in this mess.
