April 3, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL rumours

It’s time for another round of NHL rumours. We’re nearing the end of the regular season and that means the rumours are going to pick up. Some teams are thinking about Stanley Cups. However, others trying to figure out how to reshape their rosters. A number of players are set to be free agents and that means figuring out what they’ll next deals will be. One team that’s trying to figure out what to do next is the Philadelphia Flyers. This edition of NHL rumours deals with one restricted free agent defender that’s got a new deal coming up.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

Contract Projections for Philadelphia Flyers RFA Defenceman

Rumour: The Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco took a look at what a new deal may look like for Cam York.

Analysis: York was in line for a new long-term deal coming into the season. He was on the top pair with Travis Sanheim last season, but seemingly fell out of favour with recently-fired head coach John Tortorella. The Anaheim, Calif. native was a healthy scratch at times during the last part of Tortorella’s tenure.

Philadelphia seemed like it want to give the 24-year-old a deal that would be a long-term one north of $6.25 million per season. However, his struggles may make Flyers General Manager Daniel Briere to offer a different type of deal. Briere and Flyers management may think a long-term deal is too risky and would possible do a shorter-term deal with less money.

Di Marco was told by a source that York could be seeking a bridge deal. York is three years away from being an unrestricted free agent. However, the Flyers like don’t want to go for the full three years.

What It Means

This likely means that York could get a two-year deal for his next pact. As we mentioned earlier, he was one his way to a deal possibly north of $6 million per season. However, that will likely not be in the cards for him.

Di Marco mentions a two-year deal worth $4 million or $5 million would be ideal. That would be similar to the offer sheet that Philip Broberg signed with the St Louis Blues. Broberg is getting $4.5 million per season during his contract. Another comparable player would also be Thomas Harley of the Dallas Stars. Harley inked a two-year deal worth $4 million per season last off-season.

Both of these deals seem like a good template for a new deal. It would a chance for York to prove himself and possibly land a long-term deal with a bump in pay.

A sour also told Di Marco that the Flyers don’t plan on shopping York around to other teams. The youngster should be around next season, but he may not be untouchable as he used to be. Di Marco said that the Flyers may be selling low if they do look to deal York in the off-season. Briere has choices to make in the off-season, but a deal with York is pretty likely.
