NHL Rumours: Multiple Teams Show Interest In Vancouver Canucks Forward

January 23, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

DeBrusk struggling; NHL rumours

It’s time for another round of NHL rumours. We’re nearing the March 7 trade and that’s means plenty of chatter. A number of deals could be made before the big day. General managers around the league are going to have to make some deals in order to fix some issues. The Vancouver Canucks have been dealing with drama connected to one of their top players. This edition of NHL rumours deals with some of the teams interested in landing the forward.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

A Number of Teams Looking Into Vancouver Canucks Forward

Rumour: Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic and TSN said a number of teams are interested in Canucks forward J.T. Miller.

Analysis: LeBrun mentioned in this in multiple outlets. On a recent edition of TSN’s Insider Trading said both the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils have shown interest in the American forward.

This goes along with the recent news of a deal that the Canucks almost completed with the New York Rangers. Miller was held out of the lineup because many thought a deal was going to happen. However, the trade fell apart and Miller was a late addition to the lineup against the Edmonton Oilers.

A recent piece in The Athletic said the Dallas Stars may also show interest in the Ohio native. LeBrun said the Stars are a team to keep an eye due to the Tyler Seguin injury. Dallas has $9.85 million of Seguin’s cap hit available and could use it to acquire Miller.

One item of note is that Miller has a full no-movement clause. He would have to approve any trade that Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin proposes. However, LeBrun notes that Miller would likely waive that no-movement clause to make a deal happen.

Another factor is Miller is still in year two of a seven-year deal worth $56 million deal. His cap hit is still a hefty one at $8 million per season.

What it Means

LeBrun also mentions that the Canucks have somewhat softened their stance when it comes to dealing Miller. At first, Vancouver wanted a like-for-like trade because the team still had designs in being a contender. Allvin didn’t want to do a futures deal, but he knows Cup contenders don’t want to upset their roster balance.

One may think that this could make a trade easier. However, the Canucks also mentioned that they won’t just hand Miller over without a good return.

The Devils would love to get their hands on Miller to help with the top part of their lineup. He could easily slot in with Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier on the top line. This grouping could make New Jersey very dangerous. The addition of the Devils is a recent happening according to LeBrun.

Carolina has also shown interest in landing Miller. It may be harder for a deal to happen, but the Canes do have some interest in trying to acquire Miller.

Canucks fans are hoping for a resolution sooner than later. The speculation and number of teams may only grow as deadline day draws closer.
