NHL Rumours: Future of Buffalo Sabres Depth Forward

February 11, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL Rumours

We’ve got another edition of NHL rumours. The league has just started the Four Nations Faceoff break. However, general managers are still working on their respective rosters. We’ve already seen some major names being moved before the deadline. However, we may see some more deals soon enough. One team that may be sellers once again are the Buffalo Sabres. However, they may wish to hang onto a couple of pieces as they try to start the process of rebuilding over again. This edition of NHL rumours deals with a decision looming on one of the team’s depth forwards.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Buffalo Sabres Face Decision on Depth Forward

Rumour: Multiple outlets have given their takes on what the Sabres may do with forward Jordan Greenway at the trade deadline. Greenway appears at number 19 on The Athletic’s Big Trade Board from Chris Johnston. However, the Buffalo News’ Lance Lysowski talked to Greenway and the veteran forward would be open to signing a deal to stay with the club.

Analysis: It seems like the Sabres will miss out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs once again. This means the annual question of who will be traded at the March 7 deadline. Buffalo General Manager Kevyn Adams will likely be getting phone calls on some of his players.

We’ve already discussed in a previous edition of NHL rumours that Dylan Cozens has been the subject of trade chatter. Other names like Jason Zucker and Bowen Byram have also popped up on trade lists since the start of the new year.

Greenway seems like an ideal trade candidate because he’s an unrestricted free agent much like Zucker and Byram are at the end of the season. It would make sense for Adams to try and get something for Greenway if he can do so at the deadline.

Not so Fast, My Friend

Some may think Greenway is out the door at the deadline. However, he hinted at signing a new contract much like Zucker said previously. Greenway is a New York native in coming from the small town of Canton near the Canadian border.

The soon-to-be 28-year-old has been injured, but there’s hope he’ll return to the lineup after the Four Nations tournament. He may not be scoring goals, but he does provide use to any lineup that he’s in. Greenway is one of the best penalty-killers in the league and would be a great addition to any bottom-six should Adams decide to trade him.

However, Greenway would love to stay with the Sabres if they ask him. Lysowski said that getting a deal done for Greenway should be on Adams’ to-do list. The Sabres’ writer said AFP Analytics projects Greenway should receive a four-year contract with a $3.86 million average annual value.

There may be some hard choices for Buffalo’s management team and trading Greenway could net some assets. However, the team does need players if wants to move forward. Buffalo might decide that the veteran depth forward is worth being part of the team’s future plans.
