New York Sirens Sign No. 1 Draft Pick

November 2, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

Sarah Fillier, the first overall pick in the 2024 PWHL draft, has officially signed with the New York Sirens, the team announced on Friday.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Sarah Fillier to the New York Sirens family,” Sirens general manager Pascal Daoust said in the press release. “When Sarah steps on the ice, she brings an energy that ignites both her teammates and fans alike. Her game combines passion, excitement, growth, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Here’s to an exciting new chapter with Sarah Fillier, ready to elevate the game and inspire those around her with the Sirens!”

The contract is a one-year deal, and she will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Fillier Brings Scoring Prowess to a Struggling N.Y. team

Fillier played collegiately at Princeton University, tallying 194 total points (93G, 101A). Her 93 goals put her sixth on the all-time list for the university, and her points total is the most from a Tiger since 1995. She was a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, the MVP of women’s college hockey, three times throughout her career.

Internationally, Filler has represented Canada on multiple occasions. She has won a gold medal from the 2022 Winter Olympics and played in four IIHF Women’s World Championships. She was the MVP of the tournament in 2023.

The Sirens, who finished last place in last years standings, struggled to find their groove in year one. With Fillier now signed to the roster, the team can expect to have a consistent goal scorer, a relentless forechecker and a teammate with tons of leadership qualities and room to grow. She is only 21 years old, and with the right people around her, could grow to be an even better player, every time she steps onto the ice.

“Playing in the PWHL will be a dream come true, and I cannot wait to make New York my home,” Fillier said in the press release. “I am excited to get on the ice with my teammates in front of the best fans in the league. I want to help elevate women’s sport to new heights and make girls across the world realize their dreams of playing professional hockey are within reach.”

New York Finally Gets the Deal Signed

There was speculation that Fillier would not sign with New York, or stall the agreement. Some speculated it was due to how much she could make in the league. Or, that it could be an issue of the terms of the contract. Issues on either side, like how long would it be and how many years would Fillier be committing to New York?

There is no holdout for New York, or Siren’s fans, as they will get to see Fillier play this season now that the deal is official.
