New York Rangers Fire Head Coach and Associate Coach

April 20, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

A disappointing 2024-25 season for the New York Rangers would not come without consequences. As the organization turns the page towards next season, they will have a new head coach and associate coach. Head coach Peter Laviolette and associate coach Phil Housley have been fired.

#NYR have fired coach Peter Laviolette and associate coach Phil Housley.

Michael Peca and Dan Muse will have the opportunity to interview to remain on the coaching staff, but search will be “wide ranging.”

After finishing with the best regular season record in the NHL last year and making a trip to the Eastern Conference Final, the Rangers entered the season with high expectations. Despite shaking up the roster during the season, the Rangers failed to play consistently and missed the playoffs.

Laviolette lasted just two seasons on in his sixth head-coaching job in the NHL after getting hired in June 2023. Housley was also in his second season as a Rangers coach.

The Coach Hunt Begins

Assistant coaches Michael Peca and Dan Use will have the opportunity to interview for the vacancy, but the Rangers are open to explore outside the organization for their next head coach. As of now, there are favourites to land the job. The Rangers will undoubtedly do their due diligence during this process. The organization has not reached the Stanley Cup Final since 2014. Furthermore, they have not won it since 1994. Whoever becomes the head coach will look to bring the Rangers back to hockey’s promised land.

There are now five teams seeking a new head coach (or at least removing the interim tag) for next season. That list could grow over the next few weeks.
