The 23-year old is on a one-year deal he signed in September. He will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Kaliyev has not played in a game this season after suffering a fractured clavicle during training camp with the Los Angeles Kings, the team that drafted him in 2019. He has a goal and two points in five games with the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

Kaliyev recorded seven goals and 15 points in 51 games with the Kings last season and did not appear in the playoffs. In 188 games, Kaliyev has 35 goals and 71 points.

Changes Continue in the Big Apple

The young forward being claimed by the Rangers is just the latest move by the team. The Blueshirts have been busy the last few weeks. They traded former first-round pick, Kaapo Kakko, as well as defenceman Jacob Trouba Furthermore, rumours have surfaced that the team is also interested in trading Chris Kreider.

The Rangers currently sit four points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It will be interesting to see if the team can right the ship. If not, one can imagine more changes will come.

Kaliyev May See Increase Playing Time

Kaliyev was considered a high prospect in the Kings organization. However, he had trouble replicating that success to the ice consistently. As the Kings fought to secure a playoff spot late last season, Kailyev is a frequent healthy scratch.

His role with the Rangers is not known yet. However, we can imagine he will see increased playing time. The Rangers will want to see what they have in Kaliyev and what it can mean moving forward for the organization. In addition, Kaliyev carries an affordable $825,000 cap hit, so his presence on the roster will not be a financial burden.
