Nico Hischier Injured; Could Be Out Weeks

Hischier left the January 25 game against the Montreal Canadiens. The 26-year-old forward received a cross-check from Habs captain Nick Suzuki and has not been in the lineup since that game. He was labeled day-to-day at first. However, it seems that the injury is a little more severe than first thought.

The Brig, Switzerland native has only played for the Devils in his eight-year NHL career. Hischier was putting together another strong season with 24 goals and 19 assists for 43 points in 51 games this campaign. He has a Corsi for of 57.4 and a relative Corsi of 7.8. He’s also willing to put his body on the line with 46 blocks on the season.

Hischier has amassed 160 goals and 236 assists for 396 points in 503 career games. New Jersey drafted him first overall of the 2017 NHL Draft.

He’s also represented his native country on the international level. Hischier has played for Switzerland at many levels during his international career. He played a big hand in the country landing a silver medal at the 2024 IIHF World Championships with six goals and five assists for 11 points.

What It Means

The injury is another blow to the Devils, who are already without goalie Jacob Markstrom. The Devils seem to be in good position in the Metropolitan Division. However, they will have a hard time keeping pace with the Washington Capitals.

Hischier has rounded into one of the team’s better players and he will be missed in the lineup. He’s usually involved in all phases of the game and it will be hard for Keefe to replace the veteran forward in the lineup.
