Morning Skate: Progress

NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins

A win is a win.

Welcome to a new week, folks!

It was a winning weekend for the Bruins, as Brad Marchand ended his scoring drought with an OT goal to give the B’s a 4-3 win over the Maple Leafs on Saturday.

It certainly wasn’t a perfect, wire-to-wire effort, but given the recent slump, you’ll take it.

(As a brief side note, I really hope this year’s edition of the Bruins doesn’t fully embrace the 2023-2024 team’s love of giving up tying goals in the last couple minutes of the game.)

The Bruins will be back in action on Tuesday night, when they host the Philadelphia Flyers at TD Garden.

Philly isn’t off to a great start, as they’re tied for the second-lowest point total in the NHL as of Monday morning.

That game will be the Bruins’ 10th of the young season, which doesn’t really mean all that much but does serve as a nice mile-marker in terms of where things stand.

Overall, it might be a bit harsh to call this a “bad” start to the season, with “disappointing” or “frustrating” probably more appropriate.

With 70+ games to go, I’m not really sure we can draw too many conclusions about this group either way.

Looking at the standings nine games in is silly, but I thought this was a good one for the “mildly interesting” category: five of the eight teams in the Atlantic Division currently have the exact same record, as the Sabres, Maple Leafs, Red Wings, Canadiens, and Bruins are all 4-4-1.

When you’re mediocre, it’s nice to have mediocre friends, I guess.

Anyways, that’s about all that’s going on right now.

What’s on tap for today? Any teams surprising you (in a good or bad way) to start the season?
