Lohrei recalled as a reinforcement on defense with Peeke set to miss time

The injury bug bites.

It’s funny how quickly a guy can go from “why did they get him?” to “what are they going to do without him?”

Andrew Peeke left last night’s game in the second period after appearing to take a shot off his hand or wrist.

He missed the rest of the game and now appears set to miss more time, with Jim Montgomery telling the media today that the defenseman is “week-to-week” and won’t travel to Toronto.

In response to his absence, the Bruins recalled Mason Lohrei from Providence earlier this afternoon.

Lohrei likely won’t be a direct replacement for Peeke, but will serve as additional depth should the need arise.

In all likelihood, Parker Wotherspoon will be the one drawing in for Peeke — recently reactivated Derek Forbort could be an option as well, but I’d be hesitant to throw him right into the mix after so much time on the shelf.

Peeke’s absence certainly impacted the penalty kill last night, where Kevin Shattenkirk had to fill in for him.

Peeke led the Bruins in shorthanded time on ice in Game 1, skating 3:15, and has been a generally positive presence on the blue line since his arrival.

The injury may end up limiting Montgomery’s ability to tinker elsewhere on the blue line (e.g. swapping someone in for Kevin Shattenkirk), but we’ll see what he elects to do.

Game 3 is Wednesday night in Toronto.
