In Surprise Move, Dallas Stars Dump Some Salary Trading Power Forward

June 20, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Coming in hot off the press, the Dallas Stars have decided to shed some coin. They have announced the trade of, top-six type forward, Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken. In exchange, Stars general manager Jim Nill has acquired a fourth-round pick in 2025 and a third rounder in 2026.

Stars Trade Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken

Marchment, and we will say a happy belated 30th to (from yesterday), has really come into his own. He never really emerged as a regular until the 2020-21 season, as a 25-year-old. Furthermore, he still only maintains a career average ice time of 14:54. But as his time in Florida wrapped up and he moved to Dallas, his production kept going up. Three times in his career now he has scored at least 18 goals, and in each of those seasons, he did it on a shooting percentage of 14.7% or better. Impressively, over all situations, in those same three seasons, he had a points-per-60-minutes of 2.6, 3.0, and 3.7. Definitely numbers worth writing home about.

However, despite his play, he struggled to get more ice time in Dallas. Even as successful as he had been. This was also prevalent in the playoffs. With Dallas, in 49 career playoff games, he was at 15:05 a game, and threw a whopping 174 hits in that time. He definitely played a strong, playoff-style game. Those would be the type of intangibles that the Kraken would look forward to in acquiring his services.

What Does It Mean for the Teams

For Seattle, and general manager Jason Botterill, they need a spark. Acquiring Mason Marchment via trade is the perfect injection of just that to their lineup. The Kraken have struggled overall, after making the playoffs in just the franchise’s second year of existence. Bringing in a guy like Marchment, who’s pretty well in his personal prime of his career, and a bang-and-crash type guy, makes a ton of sense. Look for him to fit right in with the group, and help free up space for guys like Shane Wright and Matty Beniers. Also, this would prevent them from relying on the offer sheet route, which was the source of recent rumours.

In case you’re wonder, Marchment is set to be a cap hit of $4.5 million this season coming. It will be the fourth and final year of his current contract.

Trade details:

To #SeaKraken:
F Mason Marchment

To #TexasHockey:
2026 3rd Round Pick
2025 4th Round Pick

Pure salary dump for Dallas, as they create salary cap flexibility. More needed.

One reason this trade makes sense in Big D is a recent back-and-forth on one of the superstars. Forward Jason Robertson had recently been the source of rumours, as possibly being available. However, those same rumours seem to have flip-flopped more recently, and they wanted to keep him. In order to do that though, they definitely needed to realign their spending. This transaction definitely does just that for the club. It is the type of trickle-down effect you expect when you acquire the likes of Mikko Rantanen at the trade deadline. It seems to have been a necessary move for Dallas, and one Seattle ain’t complaining about neither.
