The hockey news has been hit by some stunning news early this afternoon. It’s been reported that former NHL general manager Ray Shero has died at the age of 62. News of his passing came from the Minnesota Wild. Shero had been serving a senior advisor for the team.

Ray Shero Dies at Age of 62
Shero was the son of legendary Philadelphia Flyers head coach Fred Shero. However, Ray Shero carved out of his own place in the hockey world. He served as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New Jersey Devils. The Saint Paul, Minn. native was the architect of the Penguins team that gave Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury their first career Stanley Cups.
Pittsburgh made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in all eight seasons with him at the helm. However, he was fired in the spring of 204. Shero then got the general manager’s post with the Devils in 2015. He played a hand in drafting talented players like Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt. Shero served as the bridge between Lou Lamoriello and current GM Tom Fitzgerald.
He also was an assistant general manager with the Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators before taking the GM job with the Penguins. Shero wasn’t currently a general manager at the time of his passing. However, he was helping out the Wild.
What It Means
“Ray Shero’s smile and personality lit up every room he walked into and brightened the day of everyone he met,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “Widely respected throughout hockey for his team-building acumen and eye for talent, he was even more beloved for how he treated everyone fortunate enough to have known him.”
Shero left a lasting legacy in the hockey world. His contributions were mostly in the NHL. However, he also was a part of the Team USA setup in 2013-14. Shero also played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and served as its captain in 1984-85.
