Calgary Flames Extend Star Until 2033

September 9, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Calgary Flames have made a big statement regarding the future of their organization. Today they have announced that young budding superstar goaltender Dustin Wolf signs a contract extension. The deal is for seven years, and carries an average annual value of $7.5 million. The Wolf of The Red Mile is now set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2033.

Dustin Wolf Signs Long-Term Extension in Southern Alberta

Dustin Wolf was already a highly-touted NHL goaltending prospect when he arrived in the NHL. The California product was originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. In all, he played four years with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips. His numbers were absolutely incredible during his time in junior. His total record was 106-34-4, yes, a .750 winning percentage. Also, in each of his last three years there, his goals-against average was 1.88 or under, with a save percentage of .935 or better.

Then, as he moved into the professional ranks, his numbers did not dip too much. In three AHL seasons where he played more than 35 games, check these numbers out. His GAA was always 2.45 or better, and carried a .922 SV% or better. The ability to carry his numbers, at a young age, simply remarkable. Furthermore, his next big test, the NHL, again, passed with flying colours. On a Calgary team that is basically in a rebuild, a major retool at best, he was terrific.

Okay, So What About his NHL Standing

In fact, he almost single-handedly made the Flames competitive. At least they were when he was in the pipes. He went 29-16-8, with a 2.64 GAA, a .910 SV%, and three shutouts. That was behind a defensive unit that could hardly be defined as strong. Wolf is a big part of why the situation in Calgary is difficult to classify as a rebuild. He might be able to help expedite the process. Even though, a rebuild is probably what is best for the long-term future of his career trajectory.

Now, he comes into 2025-26, with Ivan Prosvetov as his tandem-mate. It will be interesting to see how the season plays out. If Calgary isn’t looking like they are competitive for the playoffs, look for the likes of Rasmus Andersson and Nazem Kadri to be on the move out of town. That might hurt Wolf’s numbers in the short term, but definitely for the long-term betterment of the organization as a whole. Wolf is more than deserving of the contract, and hopefully it works out for him and the team.
