Boston Bruins Extend 2020 Second-Round Pick

Lohrei, the Bruins second-round pick from 2020, played in 77 games for the Bruins last season. The 24-year old scored five goals and recorded 28 assists. It was Lohrei’s second year in the NHL after scoring four goals in 41 games in the 2023-24 season.

Ice Time

Last season was Lohrei’s first full-time season in the NHL. Lohrei saw his role with the Bruins expand when the team traded veteran defenceman Brandon Carlo at the trade deadline. Lohrei averaged just under 20 minutes of ice time this season. In Lohrei’s last five games of the season, he played no less than 20 minutes.

Lohrei’s Role

Lohrei’s role with the Bruins next season is not quite known. The Bruins under-performed last season compared to preseason expectations. In addition to Carlo, the Bruins also traded away captain Brad Marchand. If the team wants to return to their usual contending ways, they may look to spend some money in free agency and bring in talent. On the other hand, if they choose enter a retool, that would open up more opportunities for Lohrei to continue to show what he can do on the ice.

What does favour Lohrei is his production on the Bruins power play last season. Lohrei recorded 15 assists on the power play. Even if Lohrei has a smaller role at even strength next season, it can be assumed he will continue to get time on the power play.

Some further good news for Lohrei is that even the Bruins reshape their roster, he is likely to have a role with the team, even if it is on the bottom defensive pair.

At 24-years old, Lohrei has the opportunity to show he is part of the team’s future.
